Andy Piper & Grant Tryon Memorial Tour

(1)                Hastings to Poole

On Sunday 7th August 2011 Hastings Diesels were chartered to operate the ĎAndy Piper & Grant Tryon Memorial Trainí railtour from Hastings to Bournemouth and Poole via Reading. I was privileged to meet Andy Piper on a number of occasions and both he and Grant Tryon are sadly missed by many railwaymen.

This tour was undertaken in aid of the following charities:

Guy's & St Thomas' Charity - British Heart Foundation - Kent Air Ambulance - Help the Heroes

The train was well patronised with 177 seats sold leaving space for passengers to move around and catch up with old friends and faces. The routing was via Ashford to Tonbridge thence Bromley South (stop) around Herne Hill & Factory Curve to Kensington Olympia (stop) thence along the Paddington Tramway to Reading (stop) before dropping down to Basingstoke and a fast run to Bournemouth (well in parts at least) and finally Poole.

It was unusual to see 1001 through the arches
at Tonbridge on an approach from Ashford

Having been signalled onto the Main Line (fast tracks) 1001 crawled behind an HST into Reading and as a consequence was brought into platform 5 instead of 4. This was the tourís last passenger stop before Bournemouth and gave some a rare opportunity to join 1001!

In the shade of Bournemouth Central's restored trainshed some of
1001's passengers head off to catch the vintage bus to Swanage.

Passengers start to disembark upon arrival at Poole. Many
headed for Poole Harbour and the ferry to Brownsea Island.
