(1) Down to Portsmouth
On 25th March 2010 Hastings
Diesels operated the ‘Solent Sentinel’
excursion from Hastings up to Victoria, thence down to Portsmouth.
The train called at St Leonard’s Warrior Square, Battle, Etchingham, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Bromley South (travelling non-stop via Catford Loop) to Victoria, Chichester, Portsmouth & Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour. Portsmouth was reached was through Herne Hill, Streatham, Wimbledon, Raynes Park and Epsom to a photographic stop at Warnham.
Thence down the Mid-Sussex (aka Arun Valley) Line to call at Chichester, Portsmouth and Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour; return routing through Hove, Redhill, Streatham Common, Herne Hill into Victoria. The next ‘setting down only’ stop, Bromley South was reached by a routing through Herne Hill.
09:12hrs and 1001 arrives at
Tonbridge with ‘Mountfield’ leading.
At Victoria train staff were asked if this was the train for the ‘Cutty Sark’.
Directions for Greenwich were duly given followed by an offer to join 1001 and see HMS Victory instead!
